In Jesus' time, pouring oil, especially expensive perfume, on someone's feet, like Mary did in Bethany, was a sign of respect and devotion, symbolizing an act of worship and preparation for burial. 

Judas, one of Jesus' disciples did not like

Mary doing this (he thought it was wasteful)

BUT

Jesus said,

"it is a good thing Mary did this for me.....

I willnot always be with you"
